Lucia’s Story
Dona Lucia is an 82 year old widow that lives in the nearby community of Cascables. Lucia has taken on the great responsibility of raising her 8 year old granddaughter, Cristel. When Cristel was just 5 months old her mom abandoned her, and 3 years ago, Cristel’s father passed away in a motorcycle accident. Since then, Lucia has been the sole provider for Cristel. Lucia has no savings or income. Because of the absence of social services in Honduras, Lucia and Cristel are dependent on the generosity of neighbors for their daily needs. Thankfully, the Honduran culture is very generous and her neighbors share their food with them, a beautiful example of the spirit of community and care that is in the Honduran culture.

Thanks to our local leadership committees, we were made aware of Lucia’s dire living conditions. El Ayudante has had the privilege of being a part of Lucia and Cristel’s story through the construction of a safe and strong house for them to live in. They no longer have to worry about the roof falling in on them. Many team members have had the opportunity to serve in building this house and the blessing of receiving hospitality from Lucia’s fresh homemade tortillas as they build. We’re grateful to be a part of Lucia and Cristel’s story and a conduit of God’s provision for those in need.
